Portfolio Analysis

The Observatory system provides a number of features to help you manage large collections of projects. This general area we call Portfolio Analysis.

User Defined Classification

In addition to the grouping of projects into programs, it is also possible to classify projects by a wide range of user defin
ed criteria. Once the projects have been classified you can build "project collections." These collections can then be used to create custom graphs to support your decision process. For each classification category you define, you set one or more ranking choices. These have text names for user selection and associated numeric values for scoring.

Tactical-Strategic Ranking

In addition to the user definable categories, the system has tactical-strategic axis for ranking projects. This allows you to graphically see how labor is being planned and being spent towards short and long term goals.

Scenarios

Each project may also be grouped into one or more scenarios. Scenarios can be used for ranking projects by funding category, or to plan for impending mergers or reorganizations.

The Classification Process

Classification is done in the Observatory using a Classify Action which is available on each Project Report. Restrictions are provided to control who can do this work.

The Analysis Navigator

Once classified, ranked, and assigned to scenarios, a set of Portfolio Analysis views provide quick sorting of projects by the various factors. Custom graphs can be defined to summarize work by these categories.
